“In Time Of” has partnered with local woodworker Ng Ting Ho, Roy to present the “Playing Woodstock: Hong Kong Woodwork”. The exhibition brings together 17 local woodworkers and 11 sets of interactive work, inviting visitors of TKO Plaza for some hands-on family fun.
A further theme of the interactive showcase is the possibilities and fun that woodwork proffers beyond furniture. The local carpenters and artists behind the works all began their woodwork journey from the element of “play”. Indulgence in play deprives one’s motivation in working, but for these carpenters, it is precisely play which fuels their ambition and perseverance, turning their passion into a lifelong career – and into the pillars of Hong Kong’s woodwork development.
The exhibition will be divided into 3 zones: Challenge zone, Imagination Zone and Open Zone. The Challenge Zone consists of three works that demonstrate “challenges” to the audience, and the challenge encountered by the local woodworkers. In the Imagination Zone, we display the current situation of wood upcycling industry, together with 3 smaller scale works that highlight the materiality and plasticity of wood, prompting reflections on whether we can resort to simpler upcycling methods in our own capacity to reduce waste. Manifested in the Open Zone is this working state suspended between work and wood, and between wood and art for these woodworkers, together with 4 sets of work that showcase different stakeholders in the local woodworking industry. Through this exhibition and its roster of workshops and activities, we hope to raise awareness for Hong Kong’s otherwise underrepresented woodwork.
